Stewart’s OT goal lifts Pirates past Vikings

Sophomore Heidi Stewart’s goal with five minutes left in the first 10-minute overtime lifted Swansboro to a 2-1 Coastal 3-A Conference girls’ soccer win at White Oak on Friday night.

Stewart scored off an assist from Hailey Farnes.

"It was a big win for us and a much-needed win to keep our playoff hopes alive,” Swansboro coach Doug Kidd said. “We talked about having people step up and tonight we felt like that happened. This is a great result for our girls.”

Farnes scored on a penalty kick in the second half of regulation to give the Pirates a 1-0 edge. However, White Oak’s Kamryn Davis scored on a PK with about 10 minutes remaining in regulation to tie the match.

This was the second overtime meeting this season between these two teams. The Vikings topped the Pirates 2-1 on March

28.

Jacksonville 3, Richlands 0: Madison Hoopes scored twice while Jenna Franklin added a goal as Jacksonville defeated Richlands in a Coastal 3-A Conference match. The Cardinals moved a halfgame ahead of West Carteret (9-5-1, 7-1) for first place in the league.

Northside 9, Lejeune 1: Amanda Macfarlane scored 5 goals and assisted on another while Isabella added 2 goals and an assist as Northside rebounded from an early deficit to defeat Lejeune in a nonconference match.

BASEBALL

Swansboro 11, White Oak 0:

Nate Shekey allowed just 5 hits in complete-game shutout with 2 strikeouts as Swansboro defeated White Oak in a Coastal 3-A Conference game called after six innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. Matt Morgan and Bruce Wright each went 2-for-3 while Cameron England and Tripp Creech both went 2-for-4 for the Pirates. Will Faircloth had 2 hits for the Vikings.

Jacksonville 4, Richlands 3: Jacksonville topped Richlands in a Coastal 3-A Conference game. The Cardinals (10-6, 5-4) play host to Northside on Monday while the Wildcats (6-12, 2-6) play host to Havelock on Tuesday. Further information wasn’t available.

SOFTBALL

Richlands 5, Jacksonville 4:

Raegan Collins had a hit and 2 runs while Mia Staggs had a hit and an RBI to help Richlands defeat Jacksonville in a Coastal 3-A Conference game. Leanna Whaley earned the win, striking out 13 and walking none in a complete-game effort.

Swansboro 16, White Oak 0:

Miranda Glover’s three-run home run with one out in the second inning helped Swansboro pull away from White Oak in a Coastal 3-A Conference game called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. Glover, who now had 4 homers, finished 3-for-3 with 5 RBIs and 4 runs. Sydney Dombrowski went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs while Shanna Walton went 3-for-4 with 3 runs and an RBI. Courtney Watson earned the run, allowing just a 1-out single in the fourth inning.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Northside 13, First Flight 4: Leia Cabradilla scored 5 goals and assisted on 3 more while Faith SanJuan added 3 goals and an assist to lead Northside to a Conference II victory at First Flight. Kelsey McMinn had 2 goals, Danielle Cabradilla added a goal and 2 assists and Madalynn Brunner made 7 saves for the Monarchs.

BOYS LACROSSE

First Flight 15, Northside 7:

Northside suffered a Conference II loss at First Flight. The Monarchs (5-5, 5-5) visit Croatan on Tuesday while First Flight (9-3, 8-3) visits Havelock on Tuesday. Further information wasn’t available
