Northside put forth a valiant effort against unbeaten Havelock, and while the Monarchs lost, coach Gawain Johnson was pleased with his team’s effort.

“We started strong like we did against Swansboro on Wednesday and we rebounded pretty well,” he said. “Havelock is very athletic and they get to the rim well, but we were able to do some things we wanted. We couldn’t put a complete game together.”

Adella Burrell scored 12 points, Indigo Artis had 11 and Eva Holloway added 10 for the Monarchs (5-7, 1-1).

“Eva is playing a lot better and complementing Adella and our post players, Timia Lawrence and Indigo, are coming on.”

Havelock junior Aniylah Bryant surpassed the 1,000-point milestone for her career with a layup with 5:01 left in the second quarter. She finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds for the Rams (9-0, 2-0).
