RICHLANDS — After a slow start, the defending champions turned it on Monday at the Touchstone Energy Baseball Classic

With second baseman Matt Morgan going 4 for 4 with a double and 4 RBIs, Swansboro rallied to defeat Northside 16-6 in a game called after six innings because of the 10-run mercy rule in the annual tournament at Richlands High SchoolSwansboro (5-9) advances to the semifinals Tuesday against Jacksonville (7-5) at 4 p.m. Northside (1-11) will face Dixon (8-7) in the losers’ bracket at 10 a.m.

The 10 a.m. start – and a tough 3-2 extra-inning loss at Coastal 3-A Conference West Craven on Friday – seemed to have the Pirates off their game while the Monarchs looked energized and ready for action despite the early first pitch.“We were real sluggish,” Swansboro coach Rusty Ross said. “I didn’t see the fire in these guys. We had real tough one Friday night..., and I was worried about them showing up, a little down from that.“But as the game went on we started picking it up a little bit and got some fire in there.”

Northside jumped out early, going up 3-0 in the top of the first with three unearned runs that on an RBI-single by Jalen Thomas and a 2-run double by Chad Miller with two outs. Swansboro answered with a three-spot of its own in the bottom of the inning behind Morgan’s single and Tripp Lazano walked. An error allowed Morgan and Creech to score and Nate Shekey to reach. After Connor Behan walked, Eli Tuthill ripped a double into the rightcenter field gap to make it 10-6.

The Pirates added six more runs in the sixth thanks to five walks — two with the bases loaded — along with a passed ball, a wild pitch and a 2-run double by Morgan.“I don’t think anyone was really to play ball early,” Morgan said. “After we started to roll, we just played ball like we know how to.” Creech’s double to score two runs.

That was just the start.

Northside added a run in the second and two in the third while the Pirates countered with runs in the second and third, trailing 6-5.

Swansboro then struck for five run in the fourth to take command.
