The rain didn’t dampen the spirit of Northside High School graduates who arrived at school Monday for diploma presentations.

Small ceremonies with three graduates at a time were held throughout the day. The rain pushed many indoors but as the skies began to clear late in the day, best friends Shirley Gonzalez and Sasha Sanoguel were able to pick up their diplomas in a ceremony held outside as planned.

Chairs for their families were spaced six feet apart and social distancing guidelines were followed to abide by due to the COVID-19.

It wasn’t the traditional graduation ceremony, but Gonzalez didn’t mind.

“I feel very excited. Even if we can’t have the traditional ceremony, I still feel the excitement and the happiness,” she said.

Both Gonzalez and Sanoguel said they are look forward to their future after high school but will miss their days at Northside High School.

“I’ll miss the spirit,” Gonzalez said. “When we get together there is a shared loved for the school.”

Sanoguel, who will be joining the Air Force, said she has liked the culture and diversity of Northside.

Michael Hopkins, Dezmond Ford, and Donald Burris received their diplomas together.

Burris plans to train for a career in the cybersecurity field. It is a field he has been interested in since he was nine years old and graduation puts him closer to his goals.

“I feel accomplished,” he said.

Hopkins said he is excited to have his diploma and said he’s learned from the unexpected.

“You have to do what you want to do now because you don’t know what will happen next,” he said.

Onslow County Schools’ high schools held twopart graduations this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Virtual ceremonies were held last week and each high school planned on-campus diploma presentations.
