SWANSBORO — The White Oak girls and Jacksonville boys’ track and field teams have some bragging rights.

On Wednesday, the Vikings won the girls’ meet while the Cardinals captured the boys’ competition in the Onslow County meet at Swansboro High.

White Oak scored 142.5 points to beat out second-place Jacksonville by 34.5 while the Cardinals scored 174 points in the boys’ meet to beat out runner-up Swansboro by 38.5.

“We were third last year and we scored about 100 points. So our goal was 120 and I felt that would give us a shot,” White Oak coach Chris Mueller said. “Today was the best-case scenario for our girls.”

Mueller said the difference was sophomores Sabrina Herritt and Laila Aljanabi combining for two wins, three second-place finishes and a third place while also helping the 4x800 relay team win. That, he added, and the speed relay teams doing well was important.

Meanwhile, Jacksonville coach Brandon Akin said the key to his team’s victory was getting expected wins as well as getting solid efforts from younger athletes.

“Our guys that we needed to win in certain areas performed well, which was big for us,” he said. “We also had younger guys step up and do things they hadn’t done before and get some personal records.”

The White Oak girls had three individual event winners and won two relays. Herritt won the 1,600, helped her 4x800 team win and was second in the 800 and 3,200. Aljanabi won the 3,200, was second in the 1,600, third in the 800 and ran in the 4x800. Marissa Manfro also won the pole vault for the Vikings, who also won the 4x100.

“Our 4x200 team was nipped by Southwest by a half of a second, but the same four turned around 30 minutes later and won the 4x100,” Mueller said. “We won with speed and distance to win as a team.”

Jacksonville’s Indya Hill won the triple jump and long jump while Southwest’s Tahalia Fairman won the 100 and 200.

In the boys’ meet, Jacksonville’s Rashaed Whittington won the 100 and 200 and Jacksonville’s Jacobi Lloyd won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Swansboro’s Ricky Kidwell was the only double winner as he won the 800 and 1,600.

“Going into the 200 we were pretty confident and we knew if the guys did what they needed to do we could win out,” Akin said. “But while winning individual events is important to us, we want to win as a team and we did.”
