Lejeune sweeps 1-A East Regional track titles

FRANKLINTON – What a difference 10 days made for the Lejeune boys’ and girls’ track and field teams.

The Devilpups on Saturday swept the 23-team NCHSAA 1-A East Regional championship meet at Franklinton High, less than two weeks after both teams finished second to Southside in the Coastal Plains 1-A Conference championships May 3.

“The big difference was our depth,” boys’ coach Bronwyn Schwend said. “We have a couple of truly outstanding athletes, but most of ours are just really good athletes and they perform well when you spread them out across more teams.”

This marked the third consecutive regional title for the boys.

And what was the difference for the girls’ team?

“They just wanted to win,” coach Debbie Bryant said. “All the girls had PRs today and they ran with heart.”

Both teams had their share of regional champions and state qualifiers. The top four finishers in each event qualified for the state meet Saturday at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro.

In the boys, Lejeune junior Mahlik Francis won the 100-meter dash in 11.64, the 400 in 52.28 and was fourth in the 100. Senior teammate and defending state champion Da’Rod Crutchfield won the long jump at 20 feet, 10 inches while Caleb Harding won the pole vault, which was swept by the Devilpups.

“I was really worried about the 100 and I even thought about pulling Mahlik out of it and have him run a relay,” Schwend said. “But we left him in. He felt strong and really came through to finish fourth.”

The Lejeune girls were led by Taylor Pound. The freshman won the 1,600 in 5:45.9, the 3,200 in 12:52.4 and was second in the 800. Maeve Cook won the 300 hurdles and was second in the 100 hurdles while Haylee Ehrlich won the pole vault, which was swept by the Devilpups. Lejeune’s 4x800 relay team also won.

“And we had Shyanne Tallman, who was ranked 16th in the 800, end up placing seventh and then Alyssa Ocampo place fourth in the 3,200. The 4x400 team went up from fourth to third. Everybody moved up a place or more.”
