Southwest edges Croatan to remain in running for ECC girls’ soccer title

BROAD CREEK — Emily Shephard’s goal with nine minutes left lifted Southwest to a 1-0 East Central 2-A Conference girls’ soccer win at Croatan on Thursday night.

Shephard’s goal came off an assist from Hope Kohl.

The win moved the Stallions into sole possession of second place in the ECC. Southwest plays host to league-leading Dixon (15-2-1, 7-0) on Tuesday.

Southwest and Croatan played to a scoreless tie on March 24.

“It was a team win. Probably the strongest game I’ve seen them play,” Southwest coach Chelsea D’Zurilla said. “We didn’t score in the first half but it was a pretty good team effort. It came from connecting with each other and everyone giving 100 percent.”

Jacksonville 12, West Craven 0: Madison Hoopes had 3 goals and 2 assists while Madison Washington and Maya Burford each had 2 goals and an assist in Jacksonville’s Coastal 3-A Conference win over West Craven. The game was called at halftime because of the 9-goal mercy rule.

West Carteret 1, White Oak 0: West Carteret’s Lillie Maness scored with 20.4 seconds left in the first half as the Patriots earned their fifth 1-0 Coastal 3-A Conference win, this time defeating White Oak.

East Duplin 3, Northside 0:

Lorena Alvarado scored 2 goals to lead East Duplin past Northside in an East Central 2-A Conference match.

TENNIS

Area players qualify: Four area singles players and two doubles teams are heading to the NCHSAA 3-A East Regional next week after the Coastal 3-A Conference tournament at Fort Benjamin Park. Swansboro’s James Brennan and Nick Okeriil both earned a spot in the regionals at Barton College in Wilson on May 5-6 as did Jacksonville’s Brandon Wu and Michael Jenkins. Also earning a trip to the regionals was the Richlands doubles team of Clay Yurick and Alex Blanchong and White Oak’s doubles team of Landry Gainey and Grey Goodson. Brennan singles defeated Dylan Stiles of Richlands 6-1, 6-0 to earn a spot in the regionals while Okeriil won two matches to advance, downing Hunter Nobles of West Craven 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) and James Cotton of Havelock 6-0, 6-2. Wu downed Matt Morton of White Oak 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to earn a trip to the regionals while Jenkins downed Mico Quijano of Richlands 6-4, 6-0. Yurick and Blanchong advanced by defeating Swansboro’s Nathan Taylor and Andrew Taylor 6-2, 6-0. The Taylors won their first match, beating Jacksonville’s James Dimalanta and Anthony Wu 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 before falling to the Wildcats’ duo. Gainey and Goodson had already qualified for the regionals and didn’t play Thursday. After the tournament, Jacksonville squared off against West Craven in the teams’ final league match, with the Cardinals winning 5-3. The match ended with No. 1 doubles tied because the Cardinals had clinched the victory.

Croatan 7, Southwest 0: John Keel pitched a complete-game shutout with 7 strikeouts to lead Croatan to an East Central 2-A Conference victory over Southwest. Trey Guggino and Chandler Merrell each went 2-for-4 for the Cougars.

East Duplin 24, Northside 8: East Duplin rolled past Northside in an East Central 2-A Conference game called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. The Panthers (10-9, 3-5) play host to White Oak on Monday. Northside, which is at North Brunswick on Tueday, fell to 1-16 and 0-8. Further information wasn’t available.

West Craven 20, Jacksonville 7: West Craven downed Jacksonville in a Coastal 3-A Conference game that was called after five innings because of the mercy rule. The Eagles (16-3) remain tied atop the league with West Carteret at 8-1. The Patriots downed White Oak 7-5. Jacksonville fell to 10-7 and 5-5 heading into Friday’s game at White Oak. Further information wasn’t available.

West Carteret 7, White Oak 5: West Carteret edged White Oak to remain tied atop the Coastal 3-A Conference with West Craven with just three league contests remaining. The Patriots are now 15-6 and 8-1 heading into Tueday night’s game at home against Richlands. White Oak (7-12, 1-8) playos host to Jacksonville on Friday. Further information wasn’t available.

SOFTBALL

Southwest 9, Croatan 7:

Brittney Hylton not only got the win but also picked up the save in helping lead Southwest past Croatan in an East Central 2-A Conference game in Broad Creek. Hylton (4-2) didn’t allow a hit or run in starting and going four innings before being lifted. The Cougars took advantage of her absence, scoring seven runs in the next two innings before Hylton returned to shut down Croatan again in the seventh without a run or hit. “I’ve never seen that before,” SWO coach Tiffany Murphy said.

East Duplin 10, Northside 0:

Winning pitcher Taylor Jones went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run while Brooke Thigpen went 2-for-3 with 3 runs as East Duplin defeated Northside in an East Central 2-A Conference game called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Jacksonville 10, West Craven 3:

Claire Kellum went 4-for-4 with 2 runs while Alyssa Janiec and Katie Becker each added 2 hits as Jacksonville downed West Craven in a Coastal 3-A Conference game.

West Carteret 17, White Oak 1: West Carteret downed White Oak in a Coastal 3-A Conference game called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. White Oak (2-15, 1-8) plays host to Jacksonville on Friady while West Carteret (14-4, 9-1) entertains Richlands on Tuesday. Further information wasn’t available.

Lejeune sweeps: Lejeune’s Taylor Pound and Maeve Cook each won three events to lead Lejeune to victory in a Coastal Plains 1-A Conference girls’ meet aboard Camp Lejeune. In the boys’ meet, Lejeune’s Mahlik Francis, Caleb Harding and Tristan Gogol each won two events to help the Devilpups earn a victory. The CPC championships are Wednesday at Southside High.

GOLF

Croatan wins: Led by medalist Manny Edmonds 8-over 80, Croatan claimed the final East Central 2-A Conference match of the year at Magnolia Greens Golf Course in Leland on Wednesday. The Cougars also claimed the league title by 90 points over East Duplin (2021 to 2211). Both qualify for the NCHSAA East Regionals at Wedgewood Golf Club in Wilson on Monday along with North Brunswick. Also qualifying for the regional as individuals are Southwest’s Steven Hodge and Dixon’s Justice McGregor. Croatan swept league honors, with Edmonds the player of the year and Mike Springfield the coach of the year.

Croatan 12, Jacksonville 2: Nathan Bradley scored 6 goals as Croatan whipped Jacksonville in Conference II action.

Havelock 13, Northside 4: Havelock defeated visiting Northside in a Conference II match. The Rams are now 7-8 and 6-8 while Northside, which plays host to J.H. Rose on Friday, fell to 5-7 overall and in the league. Further information wasn’t available.

Havelock 9, Northside 8 OT: Northside scored 5 second-half goals to force overtime, but Havelock got the win with a goal in the extra period in the Conference II match.
