Boys Defeat Ragsdale 70-29 In Coaches vs Cancer Shootout-NHS Mom Melissa Skordoulis "Hero"-Satterfield MVP

The NC Basketball Coaches Association sponsored our 4th annual Coaches vs Cancer Shootout in Asheville over this past Thanksgiving weekend. Fourteen NCHSAA-member teams played in 7 games in Kimmel Arena on the campus of UNC-Asheville on Saturday (see attached sheet with game matchups). There was a banquet on Friday night at Biltmore Baptist Church where the teams were fed a great meal and then each team gave a presentation explaining what fundraising efforts they had done on their campus and in their community prior to coming to raise money for Coaches vs Cancer. Each team had also selected a “hero” for their school- a cancer victim from their school or community who inspires them through his/her own personal fight against cancer. Each team’s hero was recognized as well and their personal story shared. The 14 participating teams raised over $25,000 for Coaches vs Cancer before the tip off of the first game on Saturday morning.  The referees from the Western NC Basketball Officials Association who worked all 7 games on Saturday donated their time as well, accepting no payment for working those games. The NC Basketball Coaches Association extends our sincerest thanks to those officials, to UNC-Asheville and Biltmore Baptist Church for serving as host sites over the weekend, as well as to our corporate sponsors- Krispy Kreme, Paramount Kia, Flavor First, Spirit Communications and Sign One.

A special thanks to Brian Carver, head basketball coach and AD at Enka HS, who serves as the organizer & director of the Shootout, for doing another amazing job of putting on a tremendous event. And a HUGE thanks to the student-athletes and coaches of the 14 participating teams for their fundraising efforts, the class and character they demonstrated throughout the weekend and for what they will continue to do to raise awareness for the fight against cancer...By Greg Grantham, OCS Athletic Co-Ordinator

Melissa Skordoulis, NHS Mom was the Boy's "Hometown Hero & Inspiration" who they played for..

Monarch Mike Satterfield was game's MVP!  CONGRATULATIONS!
