Marshburn NCBCA coach of year

GREENSBORO | Northside’s Tony Marshburn has been named the N.C. Basketball Coaches Association boys’ coach of the year as voted on by coaches from across the state.

Marshburn led the Monarchs to the NCHSAA 2-A championship with an 86-67 win over North Surry in the state final in Raleigh earlier this month. The title capped a 30-0 season for Northside, which won its first ever state championship in any sport.

Also, Northside seniors Kayla Stephens and Zach Hobbs were named to the NCBCA’s second-team all-state team.

Hobbs averaged 19.2 points, 3.2 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 steals and was named the state 2-A final’s most valuable player.

Stephens averaged 20 points, 4.7 assists, 3.6 steals and 3.6 rebounds to help the Monarchs go 24-6 and advance to the East Regional semifinals, where they lost to eventual champion Clinton.

Clinton senior Mikayla Boykin, a Duke signee, was named the girls’ player of the year while her coach, Chris Owens, was coach of the year. Cox Mill sophomore Wendell Moore was named the boys’ player of the year.

Three area teams finish ranked

Northside certainly finished No. 1 in the final ncpreps.com state 2-A boys’ basketball poll after winning the state title, but two other area teams are ended in the poll as votes on by media members from across the state.

Jacksonville (29-2) ended fourth in the 3-A girls’ poll while Northside was eighth in the 2-A girls’ poll. The rankings were virtually a reflection of how teams did in the playoffs.
