Good morning, and happy Friday!

This has been a pretty busy week in high school sports. Basketball season is in full swing and we're hosting the Millbrook Showcase tomorrow in Raleigh, the NCHSAA Board of Directors held its winter board meeting this week, and the football state championships are just one week away.

There's a lot to get to, so let's get started...

AGREEMENT BETWEEN NCHSAA, STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION SEEMS LIKELY
I was at the NCHSAA Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, which was held in Durham at a hotel ballroom due to COVID-19 concerns, and there was a lot of discussion about the new law that will change oversight for high school athletics in North Carolina.

HB 91, which passed the state legislature with bipartisan support and was signed by Gov. Roy Cooper, requires the NCHSAA to sign a memorandum of understanding with the State Board of Education by March 15. The board seems rather optimistic about an agreement being done before the deadline and fully expects the NCHSAA will be the governing body of high school sports come next fall.

The NCHSAA and the State Board of Education met on Tuesday to discuss the agreement, but there is still a lot of work to do. NCHSAA President Bobby Wilkins said they haven't gotten into many specifics, but the conversations have been very positive.

NO, THERE WON'T BE A SHOT CLOCK NEXT YEAR
Some people were hoping the NCHSAA Board of Directors would have approved the adoption of a shot clock for high school basketball, possibly as early as the 2022-2023 season. But the proposal did not come up for a vote on Thursday.

The NCHSAA distributed surveys to member schools earlier this fall to determine the level of interest in shot clock adoption. The NCHSAA said the results did not tilt the discussion one way or another.

One of the issues the NCHSAA pointed to was cost. The association estimates the cost of installing a shot clock at a school would be about $3,000. That doesn't include the cost of paying someone to run the clock.

This discussion isn't over though. The NCHSAA will continue to collect information from schools and monitor what other state associations are doing with shot clocks. It is also possible the NFHS will decide to implement the shot clock on a national level at some point in the future. If that were to happen, the NCHSAA Board of Directors would not need to adopt the shot clock.

GIRLS WRESTLING IS CLOSE TO BECOMING A SANCTIONED SPORT, BUT NOT THERE YET
There was a discussion at the NCHSAA Board of Directors meeting about girls wrestling. I will have much more on this later this weekend on HighSchoolOT.com, but here's an early look for the newsletter subscribers...

The NCHSAA is open to sanctioning girls wrestling as a sport in North Carolina, but more schools need to add the sport before the board can vote to do so. NCHSAA bylaws require 25% of the overall membership to offer a sport or 50% of a classification.

There are 427 member schools in the NCHSAA, which means 107 would need to offer girls wrestling for the board to consider sanctioning it. Right now, the NCHSAA estimates 150-160 schools have a girl on the wrestling team, but only about 70 have multiple girls. The board discussed what constitutes having a girls wrestling team -- is it one girl? Two girls? A certain number of weight classes? These are things the board still needs to determine.

It is clear girls wrestling is growing quickly though. The NCHSAA has held the girls wrestling invitational for five years. In year one, there were about 70 participants. This year, the NCHSAA expects to have about 400.

This will likely be an agenda item at future board meetings. I'll have more on this topic soon on HighSchoolOT.ocm.

APEX HIRES NEW FOOTBALL COACH
Apex High School will have a new head football coach next fall.

John Mozerka has been named the new head coach of the Cougars. Mozerka has over 20 years of coaching experience, spanning time in Southern California to last season, where he was the offensive coordinator at Apex. The offense averaged 35.8 points per game this past season.

Mozerka replaces Britt Morton, an Apex alum, who stepped down as the head football coach after Apex's best season in many years. The Cougars narrowly missed the state playoffs.

NOMINATIONS CONTINUE FOR HSOT HONORS
There are just 10 days left to nominate athletes, coaches, and teams from the fall sports season for HighSchoolOT Honors. This is where we recognize the best of high school sports.

Nominations run through noon on Dec. 13.

Once nominations close, our committee will narrow nominees down to finalists. A public vote will take place next spring, and winners will be announced in June at the awards show in downtown Raleigh.
