After 17 weeks of football games, the season is officially over. The season ended with some impressive performances and history-making results in the state championship games last weekend.

This week's newsletter is focused on wrapping up the football season. We've got a ton of coverage for you, so make sure you don't miss any of it.

(PS: If you have the HighSchoolOT app on your phone, you didn't miss any of this)

If you're interested, here's a look at the completed playoff brackets.

4A: CARDINAL GIBBONS WINS SCHOOL'S FIRST TITLE WITH IMPRESSIVE DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCE
For the first time in school history, Cardinal Gibbons is a football state champion. The Crusaders' defense pitched a defensive shutout in a 14-2 win over two-time defending state champion Chambers. The lone points for the Cougars came on a safety on a botched punt. Chambers was held to just 114 yards of total offense on 38 plays. The point total was the lowest for the Cougars since being shutout by Mallard Creek on Oct. 18, 2013.

3A: DUDLEY BREAKS RECORDS IN TITLE WIN OVER J.H. ROSE
State championship weekend got off to a quick start on Friday night with the 3A championship game. Dudley defeated J.H. Rose 69-40 in a record-setting performance.

Dudley's 69 points set the record for most points in a state championship game at a neutral site. The combined score of 109 points was also a state record.

2A: SHELBY WINS ANOTHER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, BEATS WALLACE-ROSE HILL
The 2A state championship game featured a matchup between two perennial football powers, but it was Shelby that came away wit ha 55-34 win over Wallace-Rose Hill to win the title. There were some impressive individual performances in this one too. Shelby quarterback Daylin Lee posted 313 yards and five touchdowns, earning MVP honors. Wallace-Rose Hill running back Kanye Roberts had 253 yards and five touchdowns on 26 carries.

1A: TARBORO REPEATS WITH WIN OVER MITCHELL
The sun came up this morning and Tarboro won another state championship. The Vikings defeated Mitchell 28-7 on Saturday to win the 1A state championship, successfully defending its title from the spring. How many teams can say they've won two football state championships in a single calendar year? Not many.

CLEVELAND DUO SIGNS WITH COLLEGES
Two of the best offensive players to come through Cleveland High School signed letters of intent with schools on Wednesday. Running back Omarion Hampton is headed to UNC, while QB Skyler Locklear is going to Austin Peay. These two have been varsity starters since they were sophomores and have only lost four games in that time -- all four to either state champions or state runners up.

The individual stats are also impressive. Hampton has 100 career touchdowns, including 88 rushing touchdowns with 5,370 rushing yards. Locklear completed 452-of-716 passes for 7,063 yards and 78 touchdowns with just 18 interceptions. He has a career quarterback rating of 121.6. On the ground, Locklear posted 1,253 yards and 28 touchdowns on 190 carries.

TRAVIS SHAW LEAVES A LESSON FOR OTHER HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES
Travis Shaw is one of the best football players in the nation from Class of 2022, he's already committed to UNC, and he's a 5-star player. When he was injured and missed the first eight games of the fall season, it would have been easy for him to sit out his senior year -- and no one would have blamed him for that decision. But he didn't do that. He worked to get back and represent his school and teammates his senior year.

J. Mike Blake has more about the lesson Travis Shaw is leaving behind for other high school athletes.

HSOT HONORS FINALISTS TO BE RELEASED NEXT WEEK
Mark your calendar for Monday, we'll be releasing the fall sports finalists for HighSchoolOT Honors and opening nominations for winter sports. Finalists will be recognized at our awards show in downtown Raleigh in June, where the winner will be named. Stay tuned for more information about voting in the spring.

WHAT I'M WATCHING
Tonight is going to be strange. I'm not really sure what to do with a Friday night without football now. Our basketball coverage is about to kick into high gear with football season now over. We're looking forward to getting back in the gym. Christmas tournaments are happening already, and we'll have coverage of more of them over the next two weeks.

Also, be on the lookout for the HighSchoolOT all-state teams in various fall sports next week. Download the HighSchoolOT app and we'll alert you when they're posted.

Have a great weekend!

Nick Stevens
